About San Pedro La Laguna

San Pedro La Laguna is a Guatemalan town located on the southwest shore of Lake Atitlán. Inhabited by Tz'utujil Mayas for centuries, in recent years it has also become a tourist destination known for its Spanish schools and night life. Local residents (known as Pedranos) engage in a wide range of activities, from the traditional corn, coffee, and avocado cultivation (men), backstrap weaving of belts, shawls, and skirts (women), to the running of a wide variety of small businesses. San Pedro also graduates large numbers of teachers who go on to work in all of the Atitlán area. Activities for tourists include hikes to the top of the San Pedro volcano or the Mayan Face, studying Spanish, partying in the restaurant sector down by the lakeshore, volunteering, and learning local crafts.
