Sailors can boat their way to Lord Howe Island all year round, anchoring in the lagoon, and are required to pay a mooring fee. Sailing to the island is an exhilarating way to reach Lord Howe, and cruising yachts are welcomed by locals upon arrival to the island. The Gosford to Lord Howe Island yacht race is an October tradition run by the Gosford Sailing Club, with over 20 yachts competing annually.
