Roogagh River Lough Formal

About

A scenic moderate walk along the edge of Lough Formal and the Roogagh River. After crossing the river for the first time take the opportunity to explore Formal More, an unusual grassy limestone outcrop. As you ascend the Formal More hill you will see numerous glacial erratics - large boulders left stranded by the retreating glaciers of the last ice age. Some have unusual markings and most are covered in mosses and lichens. The walk then follows the course of the Roogagh River as it winds its way through the forest. Here if you are quiet you might observe a badger snuffling along the grassy bank. Towards the end of the walk there are excellent views of the two famous rocky hills nicknamed Big Dog and Little Dog, and of Lough Melvin.
