Soft illumination, soft jazz, and soft pastels rule in this trendy spot owned by Chef Umberto Montano. Alle Murate was one of the first places in the city to experiment with nouvelle cuisine. It tries, however, to balance cucina creativa with traditional Tuscan techniques and dishes. You could start with zuppa di fagioli e gamberi (soup of creamed white beans with shrimp) or the lasagne. The best fish dish is sea bass on a bed of fried potatoes topped with diced tomatoes, and for a main course you could go in for the anatra disossata alle erbete e scorze di arancia (duck à l'orange). The brasato di Chiana (steak) in Brunello wine, however, was disappointing. For these prices, the portions could be larger and the presentation better, but the food is good and the antipasti, contorni (side dishes), aperitifs, and dessert wines are included in the price of your meal. The vineria half -- really just a small room off the main one -- offers an abbreviated menu at abbreviated prices.
