Refik is one of the oldest Meyhanes (taverns) of Istanbul that was established in 1954. Back in 50s, it was also one of the few Meyhanes (taverns) around that did not drown out the intense political conversation of journalists and intellectuals with loud Fasil (traditional Turkish) music. Today, still, Refik does not host Fasil sessions, but so do not many of the other taverns on the Asmali Mescit District -where also Refik is located.  In the older days, the tavern was known as Refik Arslan -by the names of its two owners -who were actually also family. Arslan, the gruff-voiced, grumpy owner, left the establishment to open his own tavern, Arslan, on the opposite corner from Refik. Hidden away in the backstreets of bohemian Tünel, Refik is a goo place to get an introduction to Istanbul's boisterous Meze and Raki culture. It is also known for the wonderful Black Sea cuisine it offers. But, it is also known for its "hefty" prices. You may try to bargain ahead of making your reservations.
