This temple is the centre of Maha Trikon (Great Triangle) of Vindhyachal and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lord Ram established this Shivling that is why the temple is known as Rameshwar Mahadev. According to Hindu mythology Lord Sri Ram performed the Shradha rituals (one of the ritual performed as a prayer for eternal peace to the soul of the departed ones) of his father in the Vindhya area, as per the direction of his Guru Vashishtha. He worshipped Lord Shiva first and paid obeiscence to Goddess Vindhyavasini Devi here. His younger brother Laxman also established a Shivling near Rameshwar Mahadev in Shivpur locality, which is known as Laxmaneshwar Mahadev.
