Pratu Market, located just inside the Old City moat at Chiang Mai Gate on the south face of the Old City, differs from Sompet Market in two ways. First, Pratu specializes in stalls selling pre-made Thai specialties and cooking components rather than raw ingredients. Second, despite its location in a high priced tourist area, Pratu usually offers fair prices. Get here early in the morning to have first pick at fresh fruits and Thai breakfast favorites. The market is fairly inactive in the middle of the day but around 5:30pm a number of street stalls set up shop across the street near Chiang Mai gate. This is a great place to have a quick, inexpensive Thai dinner al fresco. -Scott Johnson
