Platipus is a sushi place beside the Barrio Brasil classic hostel, La Casa Roja. The two together are Australian/Chilean owned, with Platipus having Australian artwork on the walls and cozy surroundings in what feels like a relaxing outdoor terrace (though there is a roof). With candles on the table and low-lighting, it's a sweet place to go with friends or a date, and though it's next to the hostel, you're unlikely to have legions of young tourists making a night of it here, as they tend to prefer the hostel bar. The sushi is fairly innovative, with a number of vegetarian options, including one with palmitos (hearts of palm). They tend to use quite a bit of eel and eel sauce (unagi), but old favorites can also be found. This being Chile, salmon, cheam cheese and avocado also figure prominently. Platipus has several varieties on the pisco sour that are worth trying, including one with ginger and honey. Most nights of the week it's hopping, and from Saturday to Wednesday there's a 3X2 special on the sushi rolls.
