Italy
About
Known more as a vacation spot or, for those who believe, as the place of the preaching of Padre Pio and as a natural park, the Gargano brings with it in the minds of millions of Italians evocative names, of Sun, white houses and atmospheres vacationer as Peschici, Vieste, Peschici Tremiti Islands, among the most characteristic areas of our country. Areas where there is cooked in the Sun and plunges us into one of the most beautiful and pristine waters of Italy (although, according to recent estimates of Legambiente, not Excel in the ranking of the cleanest). This portion of the Puglia is also one of the richest in different habitats and biodiversity. The reason goes back to the conformation of morphological "spur of Italy" and its history. When, between the lagoons and the Mainland, began to emerge the Apennines-and we're talking hundreds of millions of years ago-the Gargano there wasn't yet, or rather was only an island, separated from the continent. Only later the promontory was joined to the Mainland by forming the unmistakable "spur", but the source "island" of the area has marked the environmental evolution of the area, with its green heart, but also with a mosaic of coastal Lakes, a necklace of islands opposite and a stone desert behind that only in isolated conditions could be formed. It is a rich and varied habitats, as it is difficult to meet in Italy. The authentic puzzle of environments concentrated in a restricted territory so make del Gargano more an island that a monte, which reaches only the 1065 metres with monte Calvo.
