The Dutch built some amazing railway infrastructure in West Sumatra. One of the most spectacular is the cog railway up the Anai Valley. From Padang Panjang there is a 3 hr train ride past Lake Sinkarak and on to Sawalunto. You can arrange for a 30 minute coal fired steam train ride for about $5 from this beautiful old colonial coal mining town.
