Eighty miles northwest of Los Angeles, much ado is made of Ojai ’s spiritual aura, manifested in aromatherapy shops, psychic boutiques, and the occasional far-out citizen. But the real healer is Ojai’s countryside, a valley filled with orange groves, rolling hills, and ancient oaks. On Saturdays and Sundays from June to early August, Bill and Karen Evenden, owners of New Oak Ranch , invite picnickers to have lunch on their breathtakingly gorgeous property, planted with lavender (available for picking starting in June), tangerines, a century-old walnut orchard, and 1,400 olive trees. Ojai is not a place you’ll want to leave quickly, so consider a night at the cottages of nearby Emerald Iguana Inn , eight cozy abodes decorated with the work of local artists.
