Orchid lovers will feel right at home at Pacifica's Shelldance Orchid Gardens . This gem, which dates back to 1949 and is tucked away off Highway 1, is a nursery that sells thousands of rare and colorful plants direct from the greenhouse. Visitors are encouraged to wander through a series of garden rooms bursting with bromeliads and begonias. Even the benches are draped in Spanish moss. The nursery sits right next to Sweeney Ridge , a hilly hiking area owned by the Golden Gate National Park Conservancy; great hikes are literally a stone's throw away.
