About
Orrefors, between Nybro and Lenhovda, 40km (25 miles) west of Kalmar, has been one of the most famous names in Swedish glass since it was established in 1898. Guided tours are conducted Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 2:30pm, anytime someone shows up. During most of the year, a visit incorporates tours of divisions that include glass blowers, cutters, and engravers of fine glass. In July, the cutters and engravers are on vacation, although demonstrations of glass blowing are still available. It's possible to purchase seconds (in most cases, hardly distinguishable from perfect pieces), and gift shipments can be arranged. Tax-free shopping can also be arranged in the factory's shop. Although a handful of Orrefors subsidiaries (including Sandvik and Strömbergshyttan) also offer tours of their factories, the tours at this main factory are the most complete and comprehensive. The best plan may be to tour Orrefors first and then inquire about specialized tours of the company's subsidiaries. It's open June to July weekdays 8am to 4pm, Saturday 11am to 4pm, and Sunday noon to 4pm; August to May it's open weekdays 10am to 4pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm, and Sunday noon to 4pm.
