Old Stone House

Cashmere

About

This impressive stone building in the hillside suburb of Cashmere was built in 1870 by local landowner, John Cracroft Wilson, to house servants from India. Before settling in Christchurch, and acquiring a large area of farming land, Wilson had spent a number of years there. He named his new home Cashmere, after Kashmir in India. The large number of Indian workers who lived in the house believed it was haunted and, not surprisingly, too cold. Today the building, set in a pretty garden with a stream, about 15 minutes drive from the city center, is used as a community center and is a popular venue for weddings.
