This unique museum is set in the beautiful landscape of Banks Peninsula. The exhibits draw together New Zealand's fascinating Maori culture and colonial history. The collection of rare Maori artefacts is of particular importance, including a sacred God stick dating from 1400 and a war canoe (waka) from 1867. There is also a magnificent traditional meeting house carved by master carver, John Rua. The colonial displays focus on the life of the early pioneers. Along with cottages, stables and a saddlery, there is a working smithy.
