The NZ Jade & Opal Centre houses some of the most exquisite New Zealand jade, known as Greenstone or Pounamu, that can be found in the city. It has many beautiful designs in store, from the intricate Hei Matau (fishhook) and Koru (fern) designs, to the more simplistic but equally as stunning Patu (weapon) designs. Pounamu is renowned for its deep green colouring, and is a true reflection of the New Zealand environment. It is also traditionally revered by the Maori people as an installer of good luck and prosperity, and as a "traveller's stone" when it is worn as a talisman.
