Nyamata Church

Nyamata Church, Kigali, Rwanda

About

The genocide memorial at Nyamata Church gives a deeply saddening and moving look into the reality of the Rwandan genocide.  Over 5000 people were killed in or around the church in 1994.  The church has changed little since then; victims' clothing is still piled on the pews, and the altar cloth still bears the same bloodstains.  Behind the church, two mass graves hold the remains of over 40,000 genocide victims, and visitors may even enter the graves to pay their respects.  Many find that Nyamata makes the genocide seem real to them in a way that the museum-like Kigali Memorial Centre does not.
