About

From ul. Szeroka ul. Ciemna leads to Plac Nowy – the New Jewish Square. On the route, the impressive Izaaka (ul. Jakuba 25) synagogue, Kazimierz's largest, is located behind the cemetery . It was founded in 1638 by King Ladislas Vasa's banker, Isaac (Ajzyk) Jekeles. The Nazi occupation resulted in the removal of all the furnishings, but in modern times, historical 17th c., paintings were discovered under a layer of plaster. At present, the building houses an exhibition on Kazimierz's pre-war and wartime history. Two other synagogues are located in the vicinity. The first of those, the Kupa (Kasa) temple at ul. Warszauera 8, was founded in 1640's by community funds and is strikingly modest, even though in the interior, interesting polychrome paintings are to be found. The other of the synagogues, erected in 1862, known as the Tempel or Progressive (ul. Miodowa 26) resembles a stately palace. Its exterior is in the neo-Romanesque style, while its interior gildings are an example of Mauritanian influences. It used to be the temple of the progressive, Haskalah Jews, who in the spirit of the Enlightenment, rejected some of the ancient rites and introduced sermons in German and Polish.
