As if to balance out the foreigner driven Nigh Bazaar area to the east of the Old City, Nimmanhaemin Road to the Old City's west is a center for shopping, dining, and nightlife that serves to entertain the huge student body of nearby Chiang Mai University and Chiang Mai's large Asian expatriate community of Japanese and Koreans. The road and its numerous sois (side-roads) showcase a variety of boutiques, fine Asian dining, both local and international, at a range of prices, cafés, and an abundance of highly atmospheric bars, many featuring live music. The Nimmanhaemin Road area is well worth exploring, day or night, for an authentic taste of modern Chiang Mai. - Scott Johnson
