Berlin's oldest church was restored to its former glory in spring 2010. Upon entering the extensively renovated church, visitors are struck by its spacious interior: from the entrance, your gaze sweeps down into the hall church as far as the chancel. Above the new brick floor, grey clustered columns rise up to support the pavilion roof of the hall church with its coloured network of ribs. The building and its history speak for themselves. The new permanent exhibition entitled "From foundations to twin spires" is set unobtrusively inside the church. Works of art, tombstone art, liturgical items and seven interactive themed islands give visitors an insight into the history of the church and the city's early developments. Visitors are also provided with information about songwriter and priest, Paul Gerhardt, and his work at the Church of St. Nicholas. The Church of St. Nicholas (Nikolaikirche) dates back to the founding of the city in the first half of the 13th century. In 1809 the first city council assembly to be elected in Berlin was blessed and sworn in here.
