Newlands Cricket Stadium is situated in the heart of Newlands, a charming, gardened Cape Town suburb. The land was originally part of a farm, Mariendal, a wedding gift to Lydia Corrina. Part of the farm, adjoining Newlands train station and on both sides of the railway line, became available for rent. The Western Province Cricket Club heard about it, and in January 1888, Newlands Cricket Stadium was officially opened. The field is centrally situated and easily accessible by public and private transport. Many Capetonians are fanatical about cricket, and national and international games are played here.
