About

The Stary [literally: Old] Theatre is one of the oldest Polish professional stages. From its earliest days (1781) it has been an important part of the Polish culture. Its success in maintaining a high artistic level for many a decade is the result of involvement and effort of the theatre's successive directors who have skilfully composed the troupe and build a well-devised repertoire. Important for the role played by the theatre is also the formula of team work and outstanding acting practice and experience gained during the two centuries of the Stary Theatre. Already in the 19th century, the Stary Theatre assumed the role of national theatre. It earned the name by the famous stagings of the dramatic literature whose message was found to be so relevant to the political situation of Poland. Being comments of their times, the productions remained unwaveringly faithful to the intents of the playwrights. This is one of the most crucial characteristics of the Stary Theatre style representative for the dramas prepared by the great celebrities who have worked on Stary's stages: directors Zygmunt Hübner, Konrad Swinarski, Jerzy Jarocki, Andrzej Wajda, Jerzy Grzegorzewski, Krystian Lupa, Tadeusz Bradecki, Rudolf Zioło, Marek Fiedor, Grzegorz Jarzyna, and composer Stanisław Radwan.
