National Heroes Square

Between Parliament and Careenage

About

This square in front of the Parliament Buildings was designated National Heroes Square in recognition of the ten national heroes of Barbados: Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Frank Walcott, Sir Grantley Adams, Sarah-Ann Gill, Charles Duncan O'Neal, Clement Payne, Bussa, Errol Barrow, Samuel Jackman Prescod, and Sir Hugh Springer. Also in the square is Barbados' war memorial to its brave soldiers who fought in World Wars I and II, and the Dolphin fountain, commemorating the introduction of piped water to the city in 1861. Formerly called Trafalgar Square, a statue of Lord Nelson still remains.
