Ayam penyet is an Indonesian term for a very special, traditional Indonesian form of fried chicken. When translated it means "Smashed Fried Chicken". In Indonesia, ayam penyet was traditionally served only on very special occasions to courts on royalty and guests of honour. Overtime, it became assimilated into the Indonesian culture as a favourite dish among the populace. Today, Ayam Penyet is to Indonesia and what is Nasi Lemak is to Malaysia. As is the case with the Malaysian Nasi Lemak which is served differently from different parts of Malaysia, It is the same with Indonesian Ayam Penyet, tastes and presentation do differ from region to region in the vast Indonesian Archipelago.
