About
The Museo Interactivo Mirador or MIM, is is a nonprofit organization, beneficiary of funding from the Foundation Tiempos Nuevos, and has been open to the public since 2000, and since then has become the most visited museum in the country. Funding from the Ministry of Education as well as entry fees keep the museum going, with continuous improvements and development of new exhibits. The museum is vast, measuring 7200 meters square and is located in the area of La Granja, which is accessible by public transportation, though you'll have to transfer from metro to bus, metro to colectivo (shared taxi) or metro to taxi to make it all the way there. Unlike other museums in Chile, and like all good children's museums, MIM is an experiential, hands-on museum. It marries together science, art and technology in an educational space where children learn by doing, playing and having fun. There are 14 differnt rooms, housing some 300 interactive exhibits with a wide range of complementary activities aimed at children and adults alike. Night time visits are coordinated for instructors to come for a preview before taking their children to the museum. Interactive exhibits include those on robots, light, sound, optical illusions, bubbles and wind, including one exhibit of colored ribbons that children can run through. The museum is large enough for a few hours, and you'll probably run out of patience before you run out of museum. Kids from about a year and a half to high school age will be well entertained here.
