Musée de la Banque de Montréal

At Place d'Armes

About

Facing the Basilique Notre-Dameand Place d'Armes, this museum is devoted to Canada's first bank (1817) and Montréal's oldest bank building. The original 1847 outside remains unchanged with its classic facade with carved pediment resting beneath a graceful dome. Inside are pink marble walls, granite Corinthian columns and a Levanto marble counter. The museum has a replica of the bank's first office, an exhibit of old banknotes, an amusing collection of 100-year old mechanical piggy banks, gold nuggets from the Yukon and other historical items that bring 19th-century banking to life. You can even get a crash course on how to spot a counterfeit bill.
