The Metro Centre[82] is a 15 minute bus or train ride from the city centre to Gateshead. Constructed in the 1980s and expanded in the early 1990s and again in 2005, this is Europe's largest shopping centre and leisure complex. Flagship stores include Marks and Spencer, Debenhams and House of Fraser. Parking here is plentiful and free, but traffic can be heavy, so make use of the frequent public transport links. Note that - despite its name - the Metro Centre is not served by the Tyne and Wear Metro.
