About

Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) is one of Malaysia's most historic landmarks located in Kuala Lumpur city centre. Upon gaining independence from British rule, it was here that the Malaysian (then Malayan) flag was raised for the first time on August 31, 1957.

The national flag, now named Jalur Gemilang ("Stripes of Excellence") still flies proudly atop a 100-metre high flagpole. It is the tallest fre-standing flagpole in the world.

Dataran Merdeka is the usual venue for the National Day Parade.

Expert Review

"We really enjoyed Merdeka Square as there were some lovely old buildings there. You can find St Mary's Anglican Cathedral, beautiful Sultan Abdul Samad Building and many other lovely buildings. Merdeka Square is worth a visit. The Main Attraction here besides the large LCD screen is the 100 meters flag pole which is reputed to be the tallest in the world." - By Lalitha Krishna, 27 Aug 2013
