The effect of 400 years of Ottoman occupation shows up now and again in modern Greek culture, and one of the most positive is the Oriental tradition of fine sweets. You can find a candy store or bakery on almost every corner in Athens, but these are the traditional places that have been using the same recipes since the Sultan was still in power.
