About
Located in the vicinity of the
Indian Quarter
dominated by Muslim population, the Meera Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in the city dating back to more than 350 years ago. This is an example of the neo-Gothic Islamic architecture that has a central domed structure supported by four pillars. Inside the mosque lies the grave of the Meeran, the founder of the mosque. The mosque is host to daily prayers and is at the center of religious activities during festivals. The office of the Pondicherry Haj Committee as well as the Pondicherry State WAKF Board is located next to the mosque. Another piece of the Islamic heritage,
Kuthba Mosque
, lies within a short distance from the Meera Mosque.
