Mariebergsskogen

Mariebergs Park

About

As provincial city parks go, this is one of the best we've seen in Sweden. It opened in 1925 as an open-air museum; antique buildings were moved to the site, including a chapel, a manor house, a water mill, and a fishing and hunting lodge. Over the years it just grew and grew as more and more facilities were added. It's an active place, with playgrounds for kids and even swimming and ice-skating in (and on) Lake Vänern. There are country walks through an old forest with 300-year-old pines and waterside meadows for picnics. The children's petting zoo contains a collection of tame animals such as rabbits, goats, and lambs. A number of Tivoli-style amusements are also found here, such as a summer sightseeing train. Mariebergsskogen lies in the heart of the Klarälven delta where the river meets Lake Vänern, a 15-minute walk south of the center.
