The small mosque, around 8660 square feet, which the Prophet had built was enlarged by many Muslim rulers. A reason for this was that the mosque continuously attracted many pilgrims from all over the world to the holy site. After the last expansion in 1992 the mosque covers 1,78 million square feet, therefore 700.000 people can pray simultaneously during for example the Hajj season. Many Muslims during their Hajj or Umrah first go to Madinah's Mosque before continuing to Makkah.
