About

Quite a popular saying once claimed that Nowa Huta can boast two things: good steel and a good theatre. Yet the beginnings of theatrical life in Nowa Huta were difficult. Planning the new city, the designers overlooked the realm of cultural life and did not remember about it until the mid-1950s. The city received its own theatrical stage in 1955 when the theatre building constructed to the design of Janusz Ingarden and Jan Dąbrowski was completed. It opened with a drama by Wojciech Bogusławski Cud mniemany, czyli Krakowiacy i Górale(The Presumed Miracle, or Krakovians and Highlanders), whose plot takes place in Mogiła. The title of this musical play was also used to name the nearby residential estates: Krakowiaków and Górali (Highlander). A plethora of famous actors and directors have been connected with the theatre: Krystyna Skuszanka, Józef Szajna, Jerzy Fedorowicz, Franciszek Pieczka, and Wojciech Pyrkosz to name but a few. Moreover, the Ludowy - which translates into the "People's Theatre" - is also famous for carrying out innovative social and cultural projects.
