The incredible botanical site currently known as Longwood Gardens began as a modest Quaker farm in the 1700s. The Peirce family began collecting trees, and by 1850 the site was known to have one of the most significant collections of trees in the nation, as well as impressive formal gardens and a wide range of flora. In 1906, Pierre Du Pont, a member of the powerful DuPont family, purchased the land from the Peirce family. Pierre's interests were widespread, and he used his fortune and abilities to turn Longwood Gardens into what it is today. Longwood offers seasonal gardens, floral displays, and magnificent fountains that rival any in Europe, as well as shows, dinners, and other events to entertain visitors. Longwood's winter gardens are at least as impressive as its summer ones, making the site a year-round attraction.
