Le Sumo Yakitori

15 rue de Monthoux Cuisines: Asian, Japanese

About

This is a dining oddity that's well-known to many cost-conscious residents of Geneva, and almost always overlooked by foreign tourists, most of whom find the culinary format of this tiny place baffling. As a Japanese restaurant, it's already an oddity in Geneva, but the fact that it doesn't serve sushi or sashimi, coupled with its claustrophobic dimensions and open-to-view galley-sized kitchen, makes it especially unusual. You'll be happiest if you ask lots of questions of the English-speaking Japanese staff before you order. How many char-grilled beef or chicken brochettes, for example does it take to comprise an adequate meal (Answer: between five and six.) Other menu items include marinated and roasted quail, grilled shrimp, Bali-style jasmine rice, fish cakes with cheese, and all-vegetarian versions of grilled eggplant with garlic sauce. This boxy-looking wood-paneled place contains room for only 22 diners at a time, but that doesn't stop all kinds of local Genevois from cramming in here like it was their last meal.
