Le 5 Sens (Le Shang Faguo Canting)

Hankou Lu 52-1 Cuisines: French

About

You found it -- the most charming, affordable French restaurant in town. Tucked away on a small street beside Nanjing University, this intimate place serves savory, home-style French dishes. Part-owner Michael Martin originally came to Nanjing as a student and was compelled to extend his stay. He tried working at the five-star hotels, but opening his own restaurant proved to be the better path. I had the quiche Lorraine with green salad for my appetizer. The quiche was rich and flavorful while the salad, served with balsamic vinegar only, was a nice contrast. My sirloin steak was done far past my request for medium rare, so you might want to order down. I highly recommend the chocolate profiteroles. The vanilla ice cream sandwiched between puff pastries is just a way to get to the star of the dish: the warm chocolate sauce made from imported Belgian chocolate (Martin: "I can not work wit' zomething else!"). They've also got free Wi-Fi.
