La Marmite

Plaza Sampaio 678 Cuisines: Vegetarian, American

About

Focusing on unpretentious and fresh Chilean classics such as curanto (a traditional meal of fish and meat steamed over hot rocks in the ground), conger eel with quinoa, or the classic stew charquicán (made of beans, corn, potatoes and meat, and topped with a fried egg), La Marmite is funky and friendly. Located in a colorful heritage building, the restaurant's decor is slightly tongue-in-cheek, with random bits of ironic art displayed. Buns are warmed, and coffee is brewed on a giant wood-burning stove in the middle of the tables; great lunch specials are usually on offer. In a sea of conservatism, La Marmite is a happy and fun oasis. And they have real espresso, a novelty in Chile.
