La Cité

28 rue St-Roch Cuisines: French

About

Set at the northern edge of Angoulême's medieval core, within a neighborhood devoted to the city's bureaucratic civic administration, this small and intimate restaurant is pleasantly outfitted in tones of terra cotta and pale green, offset with white napery and a hardworking staff. The best menu items include foie gras with apples; sautéed crayfish tails; and an enduring house specialty, a brochette of seafood, where crayfish, scallops, and mussels are spit-roasted and served with a creamy garlic sauce. Most of the menu is devoted to fish, but there are a handful of meat dishes on the menu, including beefsteak and magret of duckling with orange sauce.
