La Bavaroise

135 rue Allal ben Abdallah

About

This former 1940s German beer house is now one of the finest dining experiences in Casa. Maitre'd Mehdi Touhami -- a young wine specialist who's done stints in France and with The Dorset in England -- and classically trained chef Bernard Bremond from Marseille are proving a hit combination with both locals and visitors. Located across from the busy local central market along a string of restaurants and bars, La Bavaroise has a wonderful atmosphere. The original floorboards, rough whitewashed walls, jazz music, and intimate setting make you feel like staying here for a long meal, fine wine, and good conversation. The menu is extensive and seasonal, though Bernard recommends the seafood, as he personally places the order at midnight and has it collected at 5am when the boats arrive back into port. Current entrees range from a grilled vegetable and smoked Herring salad to roasted shrimp and tomatoes in an artichoke sauce. Beef, duck, lamb, and ostrich are charcoal-grilled and served on a wood slab, while the catch of the day is roasted or grilled with olive oil, Atlas herbs, and pink garlic. There's a small brasserie at the entrance, where diners can select from Mehdi's extensive wine collection.
