About

The gasworks, built in 1856-1857 by Ing. Sezig working for the German Continental Gas-Gesellschaft, produced ammonium, coal gas and water gas, and was furnished with its own water intake, water-tower and railway siding branching off at Grzegórzki station. Initially, the gas it produced served to illuminate the city. The first lamps were lit in the Main Square on 22nd December 1857, and later appeared all over the city centre, as well as in ul. Lubicz, and the districts of Kazimierz and Stradom. It was only much later that gas began to be used for cooking and heating purposes. Production was discontinued in 1968. The administrative buildings, a residential building with a garden, a former worker's dayroom, the laboratory, the so-called new boiler house, and the water gas production site all remain from the old gasworks.
