Since 1930s, it is the hub of Yogyakarta's silver industry. The main street is lined with several silver workshops, selling hand-beaten bowls, fine filigree, boxes and modern jewelry. Kota Gede is a quiet old town was the original capital of Mataram kingdom, which was founded in 1582 by Panembahan Senopati. Another attraction of this place is the tomb of Senopati, which lies in the small graveyard of an old mosque. If you are planning to visit Kota Gede, it is recommended to wear conservative dress.
