Kosciuszko's Mound Kopiec Kosciuszki, The memory of the leader of the first armed resistance against the partitioning powers and his deeds helped Poles maintain national pride and identity. When his mortal remains were laid to rest in Wawel Cathedral, people began to apply their minds to designing a monument that would be a proof of their remembrance of their national hero. The concept of a mound - making reference to those of Krakus and Wanda was chosen, as it manifested continuation and cherished Polish traditions. The construction of the mound on Sikornik Hill began in 1820, on the third anniversary of Kosciuszko's death.
