Kemena river, On the Kemena River, Bintulu is in the heart of Melinau country and was a fishing and farming centre until the largest natural gas reserve in Malaysia was discovered offshore in the late 1970s, making Bintulu a boom town overnight. Shell, Petronas and Mitsubishi then moved into the town in force. Modern Bintulu has a frontier town atmosphere, with muddy 4WDs ploughing streets lined with an inordinate number of short-time hotels and sleazy dangdut and karaoke lounges popular with stimulation-starved oil men on boozy weekend escapades.
