About

After much searching (and many bad meals), we've found the cuisine here the best and most gastronomically sophisticated in town. It's also just a stylish place to dine. Established in 1988, Kalmar Hamn Krog is usually the local spot for celebratory meals and anniversary parties -- it's that special. The restaurant was built from scratch on an old pier where steamships used to deposit passengers from the neighboring island of Öland. Today the interior is all blue and white. The kitchen staff slaves away to maintain the restaurant's high-ranking position in Kalmar, and the products that go into the cuisine are the best in the city. The best dishes include the pork filet with a port-wine sauce; the grilled halibut with a dill and lemon-grass stew; or the filet of pikeperch in a sweet-and-sour curry sauce. One unusual specialty is the grilled steak with piña colada sauce. The latter gives the meat a scent of coconut-flavored rum and a hint of the tropics -- most unusual in these northern climes. The wines are from Austria, the United States, and France, among other countries.
