Kais

Cais da Viscondessa, Rua da Cintura

About

Two restaurant spaces are accommodated within this astonishing building, a cavernous former 19th-century engine warehouse that sits on Lisbon's dockside. Upstairs, high ceilings, bare brickwork and sculptured machine parts illuminated by hundreds of wax-leaking candles manufacture a stylish but edgy atmosphere – call it industrial chic with a Gothic undertone. This is Kais which offers international haute cuisine, dishes like green asparagus risotto, deep-water rose shrimps in champagne sauce or grilled Iberian black pork tenderloin. The wine list is equally inventive. Some tables enjoy river views but all are roomy, which makes this restaurant popular with larger groups. In the basement, Adega do Kais offers a more conventional backdrop, a rustic floorspace decorated with wine barrels where traditional Portuguese fare is served. The grilled meats are a speciality. Portuguese wines are well represented. It's a good idea to make a reservation in advance for either restaurant. This way you can also check if there's a group booking on the night in question. © NileGuide2011
