About
Glide beneath redwoods and by sparkling rivers on this fun ride.
Built in 1885, the Skunk line moved redwood logs from the rugged backcountry to the Mendocino Coast until the early 1900s, when it switched over to being a scenic railroad for passengers.Today’s Skunk Train winds through thick conifer forests at a leisurely pace, allowing you plenty of time to take in all that natural beauty. Ride in open observations cars (great for photos) or in comfortable covered cars. You’ll have plenty of things to point your lens at--this is some of California’s most exquisite backcountry, with soaring redwoods and other pines, dramatic gorges, shimmering rivers, wildlife, and the occasional woodsy cabin peeking through the trees.
Trains leave the Fort Bragg depot several times daily, though frequency changes throughout the year (check the train's website schedule for details and fares). Various trips are available. Try a 3½-hour ride that crisscrosses the Noyo River (the bridges alone are worth the ride) for a 21-mile trip to the remote camp of Northspur. Or climb aboard a 4½-hour adventure that includes a barbecue dinner at Northspur.
Inside Tip: Check for the wide range of special events throughout the year, including the annual Christmas Train.
