Herr Gunther's Zapfhaus

Hatfield Square

About

At one point, the only German eatery in the city, but of late, has become less ethnic. Huge umbrellas cover the Oktoberfestian tables in summer, and it is still one of the ideal places to sip on a Pilsner Urquell or Heineken, on tap all year round. It is a fun place to soak up the German atmosphere although the focus has shifted from the authentic experience to a much more diluted venue, now serving Bavarian 'brew and stew'. Gone are those popular German pop songs and traditional lieder which made you long for lederhausen and a fraulein carrying pitchers of milk, but on occasion you may find an oompah band, and the eisbein is nothing to be sneezed at either. Food ranges from bratwurst, weisswurst and bockwurst to eisbein and schnitzels, all being served with mash and sauerkraut. Beer is obviously the drink of the house, but the bar is fully licensed.
