Her Majesty's Prison

Coronation Road

About

H.M. Prison with the date of 1735 carved above its portals, is thought by many Antiguan's as its first and only penal institution. The buildings are among the oldest in St. John's and hence, have become an icon of veneration. This jail (1735) is not in fact the first to be established in Antigua nor was it ever built as such. That distinction goes to the buildings located on Newgate Street known as the St. John's Police Station. The boundaries of the Police Station extend to Church Street on the southern side immediately opposite the old Supreme Court House now the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda. The Police Station was originally erected in 1772 as a jail on the site of the Arsenal, which was destroyed in the great fire in St. John's in 1769. This was Antigua's first prison.
