High-profile races in Bakersfield draw fans from all over the state. Start your engines--the Famoso Raceway , 12 miles north of town, is a quarter-mile track that showcases everything from Funny Car dragsters to motorcycle racing, with big name events mixed with local races--all of them exciting. Most events are single-day races, but occasional multiday festivals that may bring in upwards of 40,000 fans are scattered throughout the race season. Famoso’s summer schedule features test and tune nights, a junior drag racing series, and ANRA (American Nostalgia Racing Association) drag racing. Tip: To hear the drag racers is to understand how the dinosaurs might have roared (ear plugs aren’t a bad idea). Nearby, the Bakersfield Speedway provides another opportunity to rev up the energy. The speedway lays claim to being the West’s fastest 1/3-mile high-banked clay track. On Saturdays throughout the summer, everything from modified stocks to mini stocks to hobby stocks scream around the oval.
