About
Hawley House Vineyard is a boutique vineyard at Hawley Beach, near Devonport in northern Tasmania. Devonport is an hour and fifteen minutes north west of Launceston (101 kilometres/ 63 miles).
Hawley House (1878) is the original homestead of Rubicon Estate - a 150-hectare/370-acre property that encompasses a vineyard, grazing paddocks for Clydesdale horses, wetlands and a 142-hectare/350-acre wildlife sanctuary.
Established in 1982, Hawleys six-hectare/15-acre vineyard is planted with chardonnay and pinot noir grapes. The vines grow on protected, east-facing slopes beside sheltered Rubicon Bay, producing intensely floral and aromatic fruit. You can taste the range of Hawley wines at Hawley Houses sister property Hawley Gingerbread House. This quirky restaurant and cellar door for Hawley wines is located on the waterfront in Devonport, fifteen minutes from the vineyard.
A winery was built at Hawley during 2008, with the first vintage produced in 2009 under winemaker Sophie Houghton. Each year a local artist is commissioned to design a wine label for Hawley wines depicting an aspect of Hawley Estate. Work by artists including Anne Marie Graham, Bill Yaxley and Tom Samek are on display in Hawley Houses dining room.
